Antique brooch coral and turquoise/white enamel
Late Etruscan Revival
This brooch has quite a few fantastic attributes. The Etruscan Revival influence is strong, note the exquisite gold work on the outer rim, inner rim, and edging around the center. The beading between the outer and inner rims is enameled in white resembling seed pearls. The domed, center oval is turquoise, opaque enamel resembling precious turquoise. The center of the dome is a hand-carved starburst set with a small oval, cabochon piece of coral.
The starburst motif was used frequently as it was believed to protect the wearer from evil spirits and harm! Another amazing attribute is that this piece serves as a commemorative brooch! The back has a removable glass panel giving access to insert an image of a loved one! Commemorative jewelry differs from mourning jewelry in that commemorative jewelry offers a remembrance of one who has passed whereas mourning jewelry visibly states that the wearer is actively in mourning.
